“ISN’T IT FUNNY HOW DAY BY DAY NOTHING CHANGES, BUT WHEN YOU LOOK BACK, EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT?”
When it comes to college there are usually two teams; those who says that college sucks and those who think, believe and say, that college is the best thing in life. Personally, I am from the second team. I love college, from the moment I started studying at faculty of commerce, everything there I love and cherish. If you think about it, college is the place where you can be who you are. I have met the greatest people in my life either in college or because of college and either way I am so happy that college provided me with this chance to meet them.
I know that college is not about friends and the period of your life that you can have all the fun you want before starting working and family. I know that college is also about studying and attending lectures and having this hard exams every now and then. But honestly, if you love the field that you study, you wouldn’t think it is hard or bad, you will just love it.
At first I didn’t think of going into this field at all. It was serendipity, pure serendipity. But, as always, god has a better plan for you and knows what’s best for you. I love all the subject I have learnt and studied in my college till now. I have always been fascinated by those things, even when I didn’t know that it is actually taught in colleges.
I remember the first lecture I had attended in my first year so much. It was business. The professor is the best professor I have met till now, she told us straight forward how to succeed in this college and why we should succeed in this college. I wanted to share with you the advice she said to me that got me to get straight A’s till now.
RULE 1: Study. I know that sounds stupid, but I have seen it by my own hands, some people don’t study till the week before exams, so the trick here is to study day by day, lesson by lesson and chapter by chapter. Don’t leave any work to do it the next day, because we both know that next day, would be the day before the exam.
RULE 2: Figure out your own way to study. Don’t listen to anyone who says to study seven hours a day or an hour a day. Don’t follow someone who says you need to memorize a word by word. Just try different ways and find out what is the best way that makes you get the things you have been studying. Personally I study very little and I get high grades, so yeah, figure out what’s best for you.
RULE 3: REPEAT. We have this saying in Egypt, that repeating teaches the donkey. You know the donkey can memorize its way home alone, by repeating it every day and one day he can find his way back home alone, all by repeating. Repeat what you have studied, again and again, till it is easy enough for you. Easy enough that you can actually teach it to someone else.
RULE 4: Befriend people who take college seriously. During my first year, I befriended a group of girls who didn’t take college seriously, they didn’t want to attend lectures and didn’t study very often and I just felt off. There were two options for me, either to find some other people who take college more seriously or just be like those girls and I decided with option number one. Now, my friends are pushing me to be better and always tell me to attend lectures, even when I don’t feel like it. I can ask questions that I don’t know answer to or don’t understand and they will help me with them.
RULE 5: Be sure that all of your efforts in college would catch up to you in work and in finding work. Don’t worry, you are not wasting your time and youth, you actually are investing in them.
